When you’ve been around as long as Android has, many apps have gone the way of Harvey Dent. Some legendary, trusted names have become completely unnecessary or unsafe to use. Make sure you don’t have any of them on your phone.
Nova Launcher
Rise and fall of a legend
Not many Android apps have the notoriety of Nova Launcher. It arrived over a decade ago and has been a fan-favorite home screen replacement ever since. Sadly, its reputation took a big hit four years ago, and it’s no longer a safe recommendation.
Nova Launcher was acquired by Branch Metrics in 2022. At first, the original dev team stuck around, but after a while, it was only kept running by founder Kevin Barry. Then, last year, he stepped away, leaving Nova completely in the hands of Branch Metrics. The company broke promises and started harvesting user data. It’s time to say goodbye.
Replacement
UC Browser
One look at the Wiki page says it all
Android is lucky to have many quality web browsers. One that has been commonly thrown in as an alternative to Chrome or Firefox is UC Browser. So what’s wrong with it? Take a gander at the Wikipedia entry for UC Browser, and you’ll quickly see the issues.
The “Privacy and security vulnerabilities” section is over 500 words — here’s the highlights. US Browser saves bandwidth by compressing data, which means your traffic gets sent through proxy servers. As recently as 2021, it was discovered that the browser was sending IP addresses directly to Alibaba servers. Even if you can overlook that, UC Browser is not even that good of an app.
Replacement
Ruined by a new owner
There was a time when Android phones needed all the help they could get to maximize performance. Simple Mobile Tools offered fast, lightweight replacements for the stock calendar, contacts, file manager, gallery, and more. The apps were very well liked into the 2020s — then they were acquired.
ZipoApps, the current owner, is a company that essentially acquires popular apps and stuffs them with ads and subscriptions. That’s exactly what happened to the Simple Mobile Tools suite. Plus, stock apps are much better these days, and there are far better alternatives to choose from (including Fossify, which was made by former Simple Mobile Tools devs).
Replacement
CCleaner
Just not necessary
CCleaner is one of the most well-known names in a category of apps that are simply not needed on modern Android phones. They’re known as “task killers” or “RAM boosters,” and they do more harm than good.
The truth is, Android has always been built to handle this stuff on its own. However, modern hardware makes them more unnecessary than ever. You don’t need to close apps in the background, RAM “boosting” is often a scam, and you can manage junk files with the Files by Google or the stock gallery app on your phone.
Replacement
Brave Browser
Hear me out
Many people love Brave Browser. On the surface, it’s a solid browser with some nice features. However, if you use Brave, there are some things you should know about it.
Back in 2020, Brave’s owner was caught putting its own affiliate codes on URLs from cryptocurrency websites. Brave also has a history of partnering with problematic crypto firms — among other things. All together, it paints a picture of a company that preaches privacy while violating yours, and is run by people who make questionable decisions.
Replacement
There are always alternatives
One of Android’s biggest strengths has always been choice. There are multiple great options for nearly anything you could want to do. Most of the stock apps on your phone can be replaced with third-party alternatives. It never hurts to try out something new.
