Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9 did not deliver a conventional iPhone 18. There is no standard model this fall. Cupertino introduced the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo. The base iPhone 18, along with an 18e and a second-generation Air, is expected in spring 2027.
That split is the real story. For years, September meant a full stack: cheap, mid, and Pro. This year Apple put the expensive phones on stage and left the rest for later. Memory shortages and a crowded factory schedule are the practical reasons. The strategic reason is clearer: give the camera flagships and the foldable a clean window before the midrange arrives.
The Pro phones: same silhouette, different guts
The iPhone 18 Pro still looks like last year’s Pro. It uses a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display; the Pro Max stays at 6.9 inches. The obvious change is a narrower Dynamic Island that can show three Live Activities at once. Finishes are black, silver, glacier, and burgundy.
The chip is the A20 Pro, built on TSMC’s 2-nanometer process. Apple quotes a 6-core CPU with two “super” cores, a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster than A19 Pro, more memory bandwidth, and extra neural capacity for Apple Intelligence. A larger vapor chamber is meant to keep that silicon from falling off a cliff under heat. Both models ship with 12GB of RAM and start at 256GB, with 2TB as a new top option.
The camera is the feature people will notice. The 48MP Fusion main lens now has a physical variable aperture, from about f/1.48 to f/4, using six laser-cut blades. That is a first for iPhone: more light when you need it, more depth control when you want it. Ultra-wide and 4x periscope telephoto remain 48MP. The front camera is still 18MP. Apple also added deeper manual controls in the Camera app.
Battery life is the quiet upgrade. eSIM Pro models are rated up to 36 hours of video playback; the Pro Max up to 45 hours, which Apple calls its largest single-generation jump. Wired charging can reach 50 percent in about 15 minutes. Prices rose $100: Pro from $1,199, Pro Max from $1,299. Pre-orders open September 12; retail is September 18.
iPhone Duo: a new shape, a laptop price
The Duo is a book-style foldable with a 5.4-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR panel. Unfolded it is about 5.2mm thick; folded it is pocketable, if chunky. Both screens use 120Hz ProMotion and peak at 3,000 nits. The inner panel has a nano-texture finish meant to hide the crease, and an under-display selfie camera so the big screen stays clean. Chassis is titanium. It runs the same A20 Pro as the Pros. Colors are Night Sky and Star White.
Apple rates video playback at up to 31 hours on the inner display and 44 hours on the cover. USB-C Apple Pencil support arrives later in software. Starting price is $1,999 for 256GB, climbing to $3,199 at 2TB. Pre-orders start October 16; it ships October 23. That is the most expensive iPhone Apple has sold, and the first new form factor since the original slab.
The iPhone 18 that is still missing
The phone most people mean when they say “iPhone 18” is still months away. Reporting puts a standard model, an 18e, and Air 2 in early 2027, likely with an A20 (not Pro) chip, more RAM than the iPhone 17, and a simpler camera. Until then, last year’s 17 lineup remains the non-Pro path — and Apple has already raised those prices.
Who should buy what
If you want the best stills, video, battery, and on-device AI this fall, the 18 Pro or Pro Max is the answer. The variable aperture is the first camera change that is not just another megapixel bump. If you want a tablet-sized inner screen and can spend flagship-laptop money, the Duo is the experiment worth watching. If you only want a new regular iPhone, wait until spring.
