For TV nerds, it’s the most wonderful time of the year—Fall TV season! It’s the time when many of the shows you’ve been waiting on are finally coming back. But it also means that you’ve got a few weeks to get it together before your remote and your watchlists go into overdrive.
Whether you’re a half season behind, foggy on what happened in the finale, or still sitting on a show everyone’s told you is great but haven’t watched yet, here’s a heads-up on five of the shows returning between mid-September and late October across Apple TV, Netflix, Paramount+, and Hulu (we’ll do this again for November), where each left off, what to expect, and where to watch.
Slow Horses, Season 6 (Apple TV)
Lamb’s Slough House misfits go into hiding
It’s a good thing Apple TV puts out such good television, because they sure don’t put out a lot of it. One series that justified the subscription alone, however, is coming in hot with its sixth season next week. The British espionage thriller has won Emmys and BAFTAs, and Gary Oldman has been nominated for just about everything for playing Jackson Lamb, the farting, chain-smoking, grumpy boss of Slough House, the lost-and-found bin where MI5 dumps its rejects.
Season 5 of Slow Horses left off with Lamb strong-arming MI5 chief Claude Whelan (James Callis) into not shuttering the department, and Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) taking First Desk. In season 6, however, things look grim for the Horses, as someone starts picking them off, forcing them into hiding and running for their lives. House of the Dragon‘s Olivia Cooke returns as Sid Baker, who’s been presumed dead since season 1.
Season 6 premieres September 16, and then Wednesdays until the October 21 finale.
MobLand, Season 2 (Paramount+)
It’s war, but can the Harrigans stop fighting themselves?
Guy Ritchie is a busy boy, with two of streaming’s best crime shows—Netflix’s The Gentlemen and Paramount+’s MobLand—under his watchful eye. The former’s second season is already off to the races, but buckle up for the latter, as the gritty London crime family saga starts its second round next week.
All hell broke loose in Season 1, ending with the rival Stevensons wiped out and Conrad (Pierce Brosnan) and Maeve (Helen Mirren) Harrigan behind bars. Season 2 has all the Harrigans at each other’s throats, including Kevin (Paddy Considine), who wants Conrad dead. On top of it, Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon) is conspiring with an international cartel liaison, Kat McAllister (Janet McTeer), and, as always, the ever-steadfast fixer Harry (Tom Hardy) has to keep it all together.
Season 2 premieres September 18, and then Fridays until the November 20 finale.
American Horror Story: 13 (Hulu/FX)
Lucky 13 brings AHS’s characters together for the first time
Creator Ryan Murphy’s brilliantly macabre horror anthology series has scooped up 17 Emmys since 2011, spawning some truly memorable characters, played by some truly remarkable actors. Season 13, we’re told, is going to bring many of them together for the first time in something of a reunion tour.
Built around the superstition of the number 13, it’s been reported that the season will feature some sort of supernatural convergence that will see series legends Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, John Carroll Lynch, and even Jessica Lange reprising many of their iconic American Horror Story characters from across the eras. The season will consist of 13 half-hour episodes, with three dropping each week for two weeks, and then in pairs after that.
Season 13 premieres September 24, and then Thursdays until the October 29 finale.
The Diplomat, Season 4 (Netflix)
Kate Wyler’s about to have her worst week yet
Keri Russell is one of my favorite actors working today—I’ve loved her since Felicity, but really joined the club with The Americans. And now, with Netflix‘s The Diplomat, she’s earned Emmy nods for every season so far for her role as Ambassador Kate Wyler, who’s navigating the upper echelon of the U.S. government, despite the antics of her ambitious husband, Hal (Rufus Sewell).
Season 3 ended with Grace Penn (Allison Janney) in the Oval Office after the death of the president, and Hal installed as her VP, shocking Kate (and everyone). It also turns out that Hal and Grace have conspired to steal a Russian nuclear weapon. Season 4, as it were, keeps pushing that story forward, likely toward war, as Kate also tries to find what her new place is in all the madness.
Season 4 premieres October 15, with all eight episodes dropping at once.
Tulsa King, Season 4 (Paramount+)
Just when Dwight thought he was out…
Sylvester Stallone’s (and, I guess, Taylor Sheridan’s) popular Paramount+ mob dramedy, Tulsa King, may not have the biggest numbers of some of Sheridan’s other hits, but its third season went straight to the top of the streamer’s global chart in its first week and still holds a solid 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Stallone is perfect as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York mob captain shuffled off to Oklahoma after a 25-year stint in prison to set up mob interests there. And set up he does. Season 3 ended with Dwight burning liquor baron Jeremiah Dunmire (Robert Patrick) alive and trading a confession tape to Agent Musso (Kevin Pollak) for a federal liquor license. Badda-bing. In season 4, Dwight aims to legitimize his criminal empire, but the corrupt politicians and rival gangs gunning for his territory won’t make it easy.
Season 4 premieres October 16, then Fridays into December.
